Bioclimatic pergola
A bioclimatic pergola is an aluminium structure whose roof is made of adjustable louvres.
A bioclimatic pergola is an aluminium structure whose roof is made of adjustable louvres. By tilting the louvres you control shade, light and ventilation, and closing them shelters you from rain: the terrace becomes usable almost all year round.
How it works
The louvres rotate from fully open to closed. Open, they let warm air rise; tilted, they filter sun; closed, they form a drained roof, with water running off through the posts. Operation is motorised, by remote or app depending on the model.
Suited to Casablanca and the coast
Under a mild, humid oceanic climate with wind and salty air, lacquered aluminium is a good choice: it does not rust and needs little upkeep. Colour, louvre orientation and optional side closures (glass or screen blinds) should be chosen to match the terrace exposure.
Comparison
| Criterion | Bioclimatic pergola | Retractable pergola |
|---|---|---|
| Roof | Adjustable aluminium louvres | Fabric or louvres that fold back |
| Rain protection | Yes, louvres closed | Depends on model and fabric |
| Ventilation | Adjustable by tilt | Maximum with roof open |
| Open sky | Louvres open to 90° | Roof fully folded |

Frequently asked questions
A bioclimatic pergola has a louvred roof that stays in place; a retractable pergola has a roof (fabric or louvres) that folds back to clear the sky. The first favours fine control of shade and air, the second full opening.
For a terrace used all year and exposed to rain, the bioclimatic is often preferred. To enjoy open sky with a lighter installation, the retractable is a good fit. We advise after a site visit.
It depends on the municipality and the nature of the structure. Check with your local authority or architect; we provide the plans and dimensions needed.
